Now in its 21st year of operation, Caledonian College of Engineering (CCE) is a leading private higher education institution providing high quality technological education for the Sultanate of Oman and the region in general. The college has produced 1,841 diplomats, 3,386 graduates and 90 postgraduates since opening its doors in 1996. Today, CCE is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious private academic institutions in the country with a student population of over 4000, comprised of 22 nationalities, and around 400 academic, support and administrative staff, comprised of 21 nationalities. College operations span two modern campuses at Al Hail and at Airport Heights, the current location of the college’s School of Foundation Studies.
The college has affiliation with Glasgow Caledonian University in the UK and a close partnership with VIT University in India. It also maintains over 20 other international academic partnerships, enabling students to explore their potential through exchange, internship and collaborative research. This approach has resulted in CCE students gaining recognition internationally as exemplified by the recent selection of a CCE graduate in a UN-sponsored space programme in Vienna.
The college has won many awards including the Best Brand among Private Colleges in Oman (Business Today, Brand Survey), Best Educational Institute in Engineering (World Education Congress, Asia Awards), International Prize for the Best College (European Business Assembly, UK), Green Awards for Education for three consecutive years (OER) and Riyada Award for Best Educational Initiative in Entrepreneurship. It continues to aspire towards excellence with the introduction in 2013 of BEng programmes and a major review of Foundation Studies to align to the needs of these new programmes. In 2016 a brand new laboratory block, the Centre for Research and Innovation, was inaugurated by Her Excellency, the Minister of Higher Education; this major new facility provides specialised laboratories, teaching and learning facilities and a wide range of modern equipment supportive of the college’s research interests.
CCE is categorised as a ‘university college’, as distinct from a ‘college’, in recognition of the depth of study offered. Over the years the Caledonian has become a hallmark of quality learning and teaching in the Sultanate, taking an innovative approach to programme design and to the delivery of programme materials on and off campus. It is distinguished by competencies that include specialist engineering programmes, leadership in process and chemical engineering, rigorous academic standards and a research-driven ethos which brings dynamism to the educational process. The college has close ties with industry and nearly 70% of CCE graduates find employment or are engaged in further studies.
Graduates of the college enjoy a high record of employability due to quality programmes that fully conform to the Oman Qualifications Framework. All CCE programmes meet international standards as prescribed by agencies such as the Quality Assurance Agency, UK and the All India Council for Technical Education. All programmes of study are periodically reviewed by independent audit and a total quality management system is in place to ensure that high standards are maintained. Features of this system include input from the Board of Trustees, external assessors, Academic Council, and assessment boards; international benchmarking helps measure success.
CCE takes pride in developing all aspects of a student’s personality through a wide range of extracurricular activities that include creative activities, charity functions and sports and Caledonian students have distinguished themselves in technical competitions and in charitable activities. In addition, a comprehensive professional development programme enhances soft skills and builds on principles inculcated during the Foundation Studies Programme.
Research at CCE creates new knowledge and imparts excitement and dynamism to the educational process through the college’s CCCI (Caledonian Centre for Creativity and Innovation). The approach of linking college-based researchers with industrial partners to undertake innovative, industry-driven research through CCSR (Caledonian Centre for Scientific Research) has attracted over OR2.5m in funding and contributed to the future growth of the college.
